It was just a little before closing time Monday night when a man pulled into the parking lot at the Sanford Supermarket.
As the driver pulled into the parking space he hit the gas instead of the brake, officials said.
William Perala’s glad the accident wasn’t worse.
“One minute I’m checking the time on my phone and the next I’m flying across the supermarket floor,” said Perala.
Surveillance video shows the car crashing into the store, hitting the scale and the candy machines, along with Perala, who was sent flying toward the aisles.
“Two seconds before he would have caught me right dead in the middle,” said Perala.
Perala never even fell. Maybe it was the Superman shirt he was wearing.
“The legs are here, so I’m glad they’re still here,” said Perala.
Ninety percent of the people when they come into the store they check their weight,” said store owner Jose Medina.
The scale was hit so hard it’s now stuck on 28 pounds when nobody’s on it and a maximum of 37 pounds no matter who is on it.
The store has several cement posts to keep cars out, but there is one missing where the car plowed into the store.
