An Orlando mother faces a charge of cruelty toward a child after her 16-year-old daughter told police she lit a piece of paper on fire and pushed it through a hole in her bedroom door, setting a chair on fire.
Adriene Latrice Ashley, 32, was arrested Wednesday morning by Orlando police at her home in the 4400 block of Crossroads Court.
According to an arrest affidavit, the girl said she was getting ready for school about 7:45 a.m. when her mother came to the door and told her to come out. She said she told her mother she wasn’t ready and Ashley became upset and started yelling.
The girl said her mother knocked the door knob off and punched a hole in the door, so she pushed a chair in front of the door to prevent her mother from entering her room.
When her mother pushed the burning paper through the door, it landed on the chair, setting it on fire, she told officers.
She said she used a cup of water to put the fire out.
Ashley told officers she was afraid her daughter was going to miss her bus and her daughter became verbally abusive toward her, calling her “stupid” and “petty.”
She said she threw the burning paper into the room to try to get her daughter to come out.
