An 18-year-old Jacksonville man was sentenced to 45 years in prison Friday in a fatal shooting that ended a fight over a $10 dispute.
Witnesses testified that Dodson was on the losing end of a fight that began as the two shot dice under a carport of a vacant house. They said Dodson drew a .45-caliber pistol and opened fire, hitting Nickerson as he began to run away.
The defense had always maintained that Dodson was in a daze and that Nickerson was struck in his side, not his back.
Circuit Judge Mark Hulsey applied a minimum of 30 years in his sentencing of Dodson.
