Teacher suspended over racial comments September 6, 2011

The school district website for Westside Elementary School in Daytona Beach says at Westside Elementary we “always show our Best Side!”

Well, maybe not always.

The Volusia County School Board disciplined Billy C. Miles, a second-grade teacher, over a comment he made in April, reports WKMG News-8 in Orlando.

A substitute teacher heard Miles tell his students that he didn’t want to see his “black people” misbehaving in public and called the only white student in the class “white boy.”

The student he called “white boy” said Miles said his classmates laugh when Miles calls him “white boy.”

The school board however didn’t think it was funny.

They suspended Miles for one day without pay.
