Thieves steal semis loaded with $150,000 worth of frozen turkeys and nacho cheese July 30, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — floridaduh @ 4:14 pm

Turkeys and cheese have long shared a kindred spirit, of sorts. They’ve bonded between grilled toast, atop deli platters and inside tortilla pinwheels.

So, it only made sense that when earlier this week thieves stole a pair of semi trucks from Hernando County, the attached trailers were filled with frozen turkeys and nacho cheese — worth a combined $150,000.

Pasco County sheriff’s deputies, who haven’t identified the suspects, recovered both trucks at the Flying J Travel Plaza in San Antonio off State Road 52.

Hook some cocaine while fishing? Don’t do this

Thomas Swindal, 53, was fishing offshore of Marathon Wednesday with his brother when they found something in the water, according to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office news release.

And it wasn’t a blow fish.

They determined the package was a kilo of cocaine.

Swindal then decided to sample the find and ingested some of the substance.

What followed next was a sailor’s nightmare,  according to the release:

Thomas Swindal began running around the boat, throwing things in the water including a cell phone and a VHF radio. He then reportedly picked up knives, a pair of pliers, a gaff and removed the cowling from the engine, which fell overboard and sank.

For safety’s sake, the brother tossed all sharp objects overboard, including the “cocaine.”

Because there was no longer any means of communication left, and the boat wouldn’t start, the brother climbed up on the top of the boat and began signaling for help.

A nearby vessel responded and called for help.

Swindal was transported to South Miami Hospital where he died on Thursday.
