The Bizarre World of Florida

Couple left very young kids home alone …….. to get hitched September 6, 2012

An unemployed Casselberry couple was jailed after police said they left three of their five young children home alone while they went to go get married at the courthouse.

WFTV’s Bianca Castro dug even deeper into the story and learned their reason for getting married may have had more to do with saving money.

Police said Kymberely Frederick and Daniel Richards borrowed a neighbors’ car to get to the courthouse and later called that neighbor and asked her to be on the lookout for their two older kids, ages 7 and 8, who would be walking home from the bus stop.

But when the neighbor asked the couple about the three younger children, Richards told her they were home alone, sleeping.

Police said while the couple was at the courthouse, the three children, ages 4, 2, and 1, were home alone.

The neighbor called police and when officers arrived, they found the children asleep in their cribs.

Police arrested the two newlyweds an hour later when they arrived home.  All five children were taken into custody with Child Protective Services.

When the couple faced a judge on Wednesday on child neglect charges the only concern Richards expressed was about getting to a lawyer.

WFTV learned the couple rushed to get married to meet a court order.

They told neighbors if they didn’t marry by Sept. 10, Richards would be ordered to pay child support. But neither had a job and according to their landlord, they were living rent free.

A neighbor told WFTV the couple often left all five children home alone and it was only a matter of time until someone called police.

“It’s a sad story. Very sad the kids are very sweet,” said neighbor Sylvia Galvez.

All five children are in foster care. The couple will have to go to a custody hearing to see if they will get custody of their children back.
