In an effort to reduce the risk for heat-related illnesses, Florida’s high school football players will spend less time in practice at the start of their preseason.
The Florida High School Athletic Association board of directors voted in June to prohibit two-a-day practices during the first week of the season.
Meantime, a new concussion test program begins today for Palm Beach County high school football players.
Players will undergo a 20-minute congnitive test before the season starts – and will give doctors a baseline assessment of an athlete’s mental abilities so that after an injury, the test can be retaken for a true measure of recovery.
Miami-Dade has been using baseline testing for two years, and Broward began mandatory testing this year.
