A Gainesville man strangled his mother, claiming she had demons inside of her, according to a Gainesville Police Department report.
He told his mother and a witness that they both had demons inside of them, then grabbed her around the throat, lifting her off the floor, according to the report.
Officer Ben Tobias said that the defendant’s mother had tried previously to have him committed under the Baker Act. He explained that, for the Baker Act to apply, the defendant must present a threat of bodily harm to himself or others. For reasons unknown to him, Tobias said strangulation is not being considered bodily harm in this case.
The victim suffered swelling and a several scratches to her neck.
The suspect was being held on $25,000 bond in the Alachua County Jail.
