Starke, Florida — A north Florida man used his tanning bed business to secretly record videos of women — many underage — undressing and/or participating in sexual acts.
The case against Griffis began when two women told a detective they thought the man was videotaping women.
An investigation revealed Griffis used a two-way mirror and a hole in an air vent to make video recordings of many of his customers as they undressed, entered and exited from the tanning bed.
Griffis made recordings of dozens of female customers, including more than 20 underage girls. These recordings depicted customers in various stages of undress and using the tanning. One of the videos showed an underage girl and boy having sex in the tanning room.
None of the people in the videos knew they were being recorded.
A search of Griffis’ laptop computer also revealed videos and images of child pornography that had been downloaded from the Internet. He was arrested and has been in custody since April of 2011.
On Thursday the U.S. Attorney’s Office says Griffis pleaded guilty to five counts of producing videos of child pornography.
On each count, Griffis faces between 15 and 30 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine and a potential life term of supervised release.
